The brilliant Oscillation played in Bern last night. They brought me this 7" with great etching on the flipside. Niiice!

So they arrived, this time actually on vinyl! The Fall singles on Rough Trade.

Was in the post today: Freeland's wicked, rockin new Breaks EP with a hint of fresh French influence from the likes of Mr. Oizeau, Sebastian, Justice. The tracks are written and produced by Freeland & Alex Metric, this explains the new sound I guess. Its a Freeland record alright, but different than I expected - and that's good as I wasn't sure if this UK Breaks thing would go anywhere. The title track has a rather minimal approach to the beats and sports some heavy low acid bass work. "Where's Your God Now?" is a slow and freaky tune on the verge of painful but cool. "Glowsticks" is the most classic track on the EP, but I think it's my favourite. Big party music. Nice one Adam.

I thought I'd ordered a box set of 7" vinyl, instead I got a replica 7" set on CD's..! Bloody weird that, - you get four CD's with two songs each... We'll, I now ordered the original Rough Trade singles one by one from Gemm. It is VERY good music. For some reason I had always kinda ignored this band, - they're fantastic really...!

Check "Kicker Conspiracy" for example... outstanding.
Here's some text from Daryl Easlea's sleeve notes to the singles box:

"The Fall's final Rough Trade single, the double-packed Kicker Conspiracy (Rough Trade RT 143) was also their first to benefit from a video. It was filmed at Burnley's Turf Moor Ground, in as a ramshackle fashion as possible to counterbalance the MTV generation that was now all-pervading. The song was a Smithsonian critique of English league football, arguably the first time this subject matter had been tackled intelligently in song. It was released in October 1983, the same month as Culture Club's Karma Chameleon and Frankie Goes to Holywood launched Relax.

It also brought the group full circle on the double-pack's second single, featuring BBC session versions of 1980's Container Drivers and New Puritan, from Grotesque and Totale's Turns respectively. The four tracks on the single encapsulate everything sublime about the band. From upbeat rants to ponderous repetition, 'Mancabilly' and weird-out, all Fall styles were served here."

99 - 05 - Vivien Goldman - The Dirty Washing EP - Launderette / Private Armies / P.A. Dub. 12" 1981

I got this record for my Birthday. Something for the collection- niiice!

“Vivien Goldman was a very well connected journalist from London who wrote extensively about the punk and post punk scenes for NME . She used her contacts to pull in Keith Levine, Adrian Sherwood, Robert Wyatt and John Lydon amongst others to make a 7″ which was released on her own tiny UK label Window Records. Whilst on a visit to New York, she took a tape of it to Ed’s shop and he fell in love with it right away and decided he had to put it out on 99. The 99 version is called ‘The Dirty Washing EP’, has completely different artwork and adds the ‘P.A. Dub’ which had appeared on the first New Age Steppers LP on On U Sound. Sadly Vivien never pursued making music and this remains her only ever solo release which is a shame as her lyrics and voice were unique and fabulous. She did however continue to write songs for other artists such as Massive Attack and has gone on to become a globally renowned writer as well as an expert on Reggae who still writes to this day.”

“John Lydon is credited as co-producing ‘Laundrette’, along with Goldman and Keith Levene (who also plays guitar and bass). Apparently this single by music journalist Vivien Goldman was recorded when PiL snuck her into the Manor (studios) during the ‘Flowers Of Romance’ sessions in late 1980, with PiL also reportedly paying for most of the recording costs. It seems this is how Lydon earned his co-producer credit.

«The Tape vs. RQM - Luvely» with Remixes by Chris de Luca, Kalabrese & Filewile is out now!

The Tape vs RQM is Berlin based producer Robot Koch (Jahcoozi, Autodrive, MMDC) and Polish Brooklyn born, Barcelona resident MC RQM (Al Haca, Stereotyp, I-Wolf, Filewile). The EP Luvely features the original track and three remixes by Chris de Luca (Funkstörung), Filewile and Kalabrese.

Luvely is a soulful, Rock-Electronica tune, built on a strong Hip Hop foundation. The intro gives the impression of listening to a live band play - an impression that remains throughout the track, even though the electronic production is hardly concealed. A Heavy rhythm section, super tight arrangements, intelligent in your face rhymes and an incredible over all groove make up this monster of a tune. Strange this piece was made in Berlin, when it sounds so incredibly American. It's just so very soulful, so big city sound, so 70's influenced, so movie score... so big! This sounds like the Mahavishnu Orchestra of Hip Hop - from a Billy Cobham kinda angle - so take it as a compliment.
